Stopover Tourism: The Billion-Dollar Question
Every visitor who flies into The Bahamas fills out a simple pink immigration card. Inside those slips of paper lies powerful insight into how tourism fuels our economy—but much of it goes unused.
At Dharma Data Solutions, we built a simulation to show what’s possible. By combining pink form data structures with resort KPIs and spending patterns, we modeled the stopover economy for the first eight months of 2025. The results were striking: billions in visitor spending flowing through hotels, restaurants, and local businesses—insights that could transform how we plan for growth.
Tourism isn’t just about counting arrivals. It’s about understanding value—where money is spent, who spends it, and how it impacts national development. With smarter data, The Bahamas can unlock that story.
Starting with official air arrivals (4.44 million in 2023), we projected a modest 5% growth rate for 2025. That put us at 4.66 million stopover visitors, with 3.1 million arriving between January and August alone.
Here’s where they stayed:
-
54.4% in major resorts like Atlantis and Baha Mar
-
21.3% in boutique hotels
-
14.6% in Airbnb/vacation rentals
-
The rest with family and friends
And here’s how they spent, per day:
-
$444 on accommodations
-
$152 on food & beverage
-
$99 on tours, spa, and shopping
-
With an average stay of 5 nights
By layering these figures and weighting households (adults and children), we calculated billions in spending flowing through the Bahamian economy—just from the first eight months of 2025.
For too long, our national focus has been on volume: how many tourists arrive. But the real question is value: how much they spend, where they spend it, and what that means for our future.
With deeper tourism intelligence, we could:
-
Forecast government revenues with more precision
-
Guide private investment toward the strongest segments
-
Plan smarter for airlift, utilities, and local development
-
Identify which visitor types—resort, boutique, Airbnb—truly drive GDP growth
This isn’t just analytics. It’s a blueprint for smarter national planning.
This was a simulation. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. The data is already being collected—by immigration officers, hotels, and booking platforms. What we need is coordination, transparency, and the political will to build a national tourism intelligence system.
At Dharma Data Solutions, we’re ready to help lead that effort. But we also want to listen. Should we simulate Family Island tourism? Destination weddings? Cultural festivals? Cruise-to-stay conversions?
Tourism is our most powerful engine. But without sharper insights, we’re leaving too much untapped.
It’s time to dig deeper—together.
